ESS has implemented a robust and future-proof system platform that ensures precise, stable, and scalable data acquisition for advanced real-time control.

Complex Data Requirements
Through close collaboration with Blue Line, ESS has implemented a tailored and future-proof system platform that ensures stable and precise data acquisition in connection with the control system’s complex operational functions.

The data acquisition system addresses the demands of critical environments, where high precision, operational stability, quality, and delivery reliability are essential.

ESS required a system capable of handling data-intensive processes in real time, ensuring precise timing across subsystems, and integrating seamlessly with existing overarching control systems.

Scalable Platform
The solution is based on the mSYS-8300 system platform, a flexible and scalable mTCA.4-based platform designed for advanced real-time applications. With a modular architecture, the system is configured to meet ESS’s specific requirements.

Support for high-performance processors, FPGAs, and high-precision digitizers ensures accurate synchronization, high data quality, and stable integration with ESS’s control environment.

The platform is also designed with a strong focus on operational reliability, featuring redundant power supplies, efficient cooling, and a robust construction. This provides ESS with a future-proof solution that supports stable operation while allowing for expansion as the facility evolves.

A Collaboration Focused on Quality
The collaboration between ESS and Blue Line has been characterized by high technical requirements, close dialogue, and a shared focus on quality.

The project demonstrates how specialized solutions can meet the demands of some of the world’s most advanced research facilities.

Brian Ulskov Sørensen, who led the collaboration from Blue Line’s side, highlights that the close partnership with ESS, where the development process was built on the exchange of many years of mutual experience, has been key to achieving a strong joint result.

The European Spallation Source (ESS)
ESS) is one of the world’s most advanced research facilities, currently being established in Lund, Sweden. ESS is a multidisciplinary research center based on the world’s most powerful neutron source, enabling scientists to study materials at atomic and molecular levels.

The facility supports research within areas such as materials science, energy, environmental science, and life sciences. By providing unique insights into the structure and behavior of materials, ESS contributes to solving some of the most important scientific and technological challenges of our time.
